Mootz Candies History
Mootz Candies prides itself on its wide variety of homemade confections with specialized items to add a sweet touch to every season.
From peanut butter cream to nut chews, maple walnut to vanilla creams, light and dark chocolates, chocolate-covered pretzels, even chocolate pops--all can be found at Mootz Candies.
Mootz Candies has been owned and operated by the same family for more than 80 years.
The business evolved from the days when the extras from Catherine Mootz's most recent batch of homemade candies were displayed in the window of Mootz's Imported and Domestic Grocery Store more than 80 years ago.
Over the next ten years, her candy became so popular that candy sales exceeded grocery sales and Mootz Candies was founded. An imaginative confectioner, she created her still famous peanut rolls, pastel mints and even a specialty called, "Black Diamonds," which is a black licorice flavored hard candy which looks like coal.
The founder, Catherine Mootz, prided herself on the high quality of her confections, and that pride is still very much evident today, according to her grandson, Ned Buckley, Buckley uses the same ingredients called for in his grandmother's original recipes. Many of the pieces are still made by hand, including the store's famous peanut rolls.
Georgine Buckley, Virginia Gallagher, and James Mootz, three of Catherine's six children operated the business from the 1950's to 1990. Ned Buckley, Catherine's grandson, continues his family business today using the same recipes, high quality ingredients, and exceptional customer service Mootz Candies customers have come to expect.
